What DON’T Other People Charge

Asking “How much should I charge for X” usually means that the expert is trying to get directions on who to copy the pricing from. But that’s like baking with someone else’s recipe without knowing the ingredients you have in your kitchen. You might end up with something edible, but it won’t be what you actually want to make.

Here’s why copying someone else’s pricing can do more harm than good:

– – It makes your service seem more generic, which would be fine if it were true or in your interest to appear that way—but it’s neither.

And people|

The info you gather is tainted and may simply be bad. Other people’s pricing contains a concoction of their insecurities, inexperience and fear of rejection or even desperation.
– – It makes you look like a follower, suggesting low confidence, even if you are smart and experienced. Confidence is the biggest lead magnet in all expertise-based industries.
– – Pricing is hard to “adapt” from one context to another. If your target market, location, or industry differs just a little bit from the one you copy, then their price will probably not behave in the same way.

So when setting prices, ask yourself what others aren’t charging. Then, ask yourself why, and figure out a way in which charging that much would be a good idea (for you). This approach will likely yield better results than relying on your guesswork or somebody else’s.

I’m rooting for you!
